ABSTRACT

Head and neck cancers: the state-of-art

that line-up the mucosal surfaces of organs and tissues from the head and neck. They are often defined as squamous cell carcinomas and can develop, although more rarely, in salivary glands. Thyroid tumors which have a separate classification are excluded. According to the latest available estimates, these tumors are also more frequently arising among young people, predominantly males, and with usually unfavorable prognosis due to late diagnoses, especially in low-income countries. The risk factors implicated in the onset of the neoplastic insurgence, are different and are summarized in this contribute: smoking, abuse of spirits, chewing of betel quid, papilloma virus infections, other of lesser importance, including pollution and inhalation of dust, poor diet, incorrect oral hygiene. However, the genetic of these tumors remains to be explored and investigated more diffusely and remains, in the opinion of the Author, greatly underestimated. This review aims to highlight these rather aggressive neoplasia that are certainly less studied than breast cancer, colon cancer, and so on. They have significant implications on affected individuals, due to the delicacy of the areas where they are located.
