Among the papers of this issue, it is worth mentioning the Editorial which comments on the awarding of the 2023 Nobel Prize for Medicine for the definition of the mechanisms underlying the development of mRNA vaccines, further confirmation of the relevance of Molecular Biology techniques for human health. The issue also includes a review that takes stock of the COVID-19 pandemic almost 4 years after its onset, retracing some aspects to help us understand what has happened and thus be prepared adequately for the future; the review is accompanied by an Editorial. The topic is taken up again in a Letter to the Editor illustrating the results of an EFLM questionnaire on the profound impact of the COVID emergency on laboratory medicine in Italy. The interest of the issue also lies in a document prepared by a group of colleagues from the Istituto Superiore di Sanità (Italy) on the topic of cut-off values for ascertaining the state of psycho-physical alteration while driving, proposing specific analytical protocols and specific cut-off values. Finally, it is certainly worth mentioning an important SIBioC Document from the Haemostasis Study Group containing valuable indications relating to the harmonization of the laboratory report for coagulation test.
